On my TBR this week

I’m exploring three different genres this week. As an aspiring fiction writer, I have been advised by those who have been there and done that to read genres that I don’t usually go for. I’ve read a lot of history and historical fiction and there’s still so much more! But this week, I’m not looking back at the past.

Here are the exciting new books on my TBR. Let’s see if I take a liking to them!

Bossypants by Tina Fey

I’ve heard rave reviews of this autobiography. It is said to be hilarious (of course, it’s Tina Fey!) and introspective. She takes us behind the scenes of SNL and 30 Rock, her life as Liz Lemon (her character on 30 Rock) and answers a very important question she keeps getting asked “What is it like be the boss?” in her usual, self-deprecating brand of humor.

The Shell Collector by Anthony Doerr

This guy, where do I even start? Anthony Doerr’s writing mesmerized me in ‘All The Light We Cannot See‘. So naturally, I looked for everything else he has written. The Shell Collector is a collection of his short stories. I’ve just started this one and once again, I’m getting pulled into the world he has created. Unbelievable imagery, distant lands, magical fiction. Once again, I don’t fully understand the story right away, but his words are magic.

The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi

My very first sci-fi book! This one is recommended by my library, but I haven’t read reviews anywhere else. Going into this blind! All I’ve gathered so far is that it is set in Thailand of the future. The future, is bleak and depressing (why is the future always bleak and depressing in sci-fi books?), huge corporations have monopolized food supply and engineered plant species which cannot be reproduced by anyone else. Then there’s the windup girl, a sort of an android, one of the “New People”. What remains to be seen is how the two stories are connected. Can you tell I’m going way out of my comfort zone here?

That’s it from my bookshelf. What are you reading currently?
