We’re in position when the prospective buyers arrive. My husband has his arm around me. Our beautiful kids parrot pleasantries.
It’s perfect.
Later, the realtor pays us.
Back at my dingy apartment, I pray the house never gets sold.

Aw, I want this family to have the lovely house. Great twist!
Loved the reveal at the end. Nice job telling a lot in so few words!
Thank you, Jennifer!
I agree with Jennifer love the surprise ending. What an imagination 🙂
This happens for real? Or maybe I should get out more… 😉 Like the others, I enjoyed the twist.
It does! A realtor told me they still use actors to pose as families for open houses!
So this is where things happen differently in different countries – here in Australia, the owners leave the house during open houses. It took me a few minutes to understand because of that and then I kinda gathered it might be a cultural difference thing and once I got that, I enjoyed the story as it tells you so much more with about her life. Nicely done!
It’s the same in America too, owners just leave the house. But a realtor once told me some of them hire actors to stage open houses. I thought it was weird, but it gave me the idea for this story 🙂
Ouch! I’ve never been in that exact situation, but I’ve been in ones similar enough that it really stabbed–a serious achievement for 39 words. Well done!
