Moles and Eagles

“Everything you wish for is on the other side of the hills.” Our bellies were empty, but Mother stuffed our eyes with ambition. Our eyes brimming with dreams, we stayed awake thinking of what treasures lay outside the sleepy hill station we called home.

I dug through the hills with sweat and blood so you, little brother, could soar. I worked so you could get an education. With books and degrees, you spun your wings. I became the mole so you could be the eagle.

We’ve crossed the hills, but I’m too tired to cross these mountains between us.
